From Martha Bakerjian, your Guide to Italy Travel

This week we feature Venice, in the northeast of Italy, and the region of Puglia, in the southeast. These are two very different parts of Italy, both well worth a visit. You can see photos of Puglia in the top section, A Closer Look at Puglia, and Venice photos in our new gallery, Piazza San Marco.

Piazza San Marco, or Saint Mark's Square, is the main square of Venice and a top tourist attraction. Enjoy our new photo gallery of Piazza San Marco.

Luxury Lodging in Venice
One way to experience the splendor and romance of Venice is to stay in one of Venice's luxury hotels. Often housed in historic buildings and ornately decorated, most of these deluxe hotels have special amenities such as a spa, gourmet restaurant, or private dock...

The Heel of the Boot
At the opposite end of Italy from Venice, a visit to the Puglia region gives you a completely different Italian experience. The southern region is more laid back, generally less expensive, and sees fewer tourists but still has a lot to offer. My colleague on Senior Travel says, "Puglia does have some great beaches. It also has castles, pilgrimage sites, churches, the unusual trulli and excellent food. I highly recommend a visit to this region of Italy."

August in Italy
During August the beaches are crowded and cities empty out as Italians go on vacation. August 15 is a big holiday often celebrated with special events and a day to avoid driving near the coast. In August there are many outdoor music festivals, food festivals, the second running of the palio horse race in Siena, and medieval festivals like the Quintina, a jousting event in Ascoli Piceno.
